Walgreen’s Policy-Ignore Child Abuse

by Michelle Lamar on January 22, 2007

Walgreen’s  has a corporate policy that makes people ignore common sense.

On Saturday, a customer at a Michigan Walgreen’s saw an unmistakable example of child abuse in the parking lot. The customer, Candice Sanborn, saw a woman hitting a toddler as she carried the child out to the parking lot.

“She was screaming that she was going to kill her,” said Sanborn. “She also told her she wished she was never born.”

The woman then threw the child against a wall and a car before punching the child as she put her inside a car.

When Ms. Sanborn, Walgreen’s customer, saw the child abuse, she got the plate number and ran back into the store.   Sanborn was trying to keep
watch on the abused toddler.  So she asked the Walgreen’s employees to call 911 and write down the plate number.

Then the monster mother and child came back into the Walgreen’s store to tell Ms. Sanborn to mind her own business.  The mother also had a few more
choice words of parental wisdom.  According to Ms. Sanborn the mother announced to everyone in the store that they could “have her daughter”!  The most chilling part of this train wreck was when the mother said:

I can kill her if I want

The the “mother” and child left the store.

If you think this story is bad, just read on. You won’t believe what happened next.

After they left, Ms. Sanborn was told by the Walgreen’s store manager that no one called 911!

When no one called 911, Sanborn said asked for the piece of paper  with the license plate number of the abusive mother.  Sanborn had given the paper to the store employees when she asked them to call 911.

Ms. Sanborn was told she couldn’t have the piece of paper back!  She was told it was CORPORATE POLICY!

It gets even worse.

Sanborn did not have a cell phone with her and she tried to use the pay phone outside the Walgreen’s store to call the police.  Sanborn said she was also told by the Walgreen’s store manager that she couldn’t use the pay phone outside because it was on Walgreens property!

Ms. Sanborn called 911 about 90 minutes later  but was told there wasn’t much police could do without a license plate number.

The cops asked for a description of the car and the workers at the store, but again said there wasn’t much they could do.

Walgreen’s spokesperson claims that the employees did not keep  Sanborn from calling 911 and they are “investigating” the incident.
Way to go Walgreen’s!  Let’s blame the customer.

I realize that policies are in place for reasons.  As a parent, I know I have yelled at my kids in stores and grabbed them.

But for the love of God, when a monster like that woman is throwing a toddler against a wall and telling a store full of people that she “can kill her” if she wants to— doesn’t this cross the line a bit?

These store employees and the Walgreen’s corporate management need to remember that doing a job and obeying a corporate policy is not an acceptable excuse for immoral behavior!

Walgreen’s kept Ms. Sanborn AND the police from having the license plate number of the abusive mother!

Employees have a responsibility to be good human beings first.
